  • What will Francis do?

A United Nations’ committee has asked the Vatican to turn over documents pertaining to child sex abuse and cover up.

    According to The Tablet:

The UN’s Geneva-based Committee on the Rights of the Child on Tuesday issued a list of demands for detailed information from the Holy See regarding all cases of child sexual abuse committed by clergy and Religious.

The Vatican has until January to compile the information, in time for a meeting of the UN committee at which Vatican officials will be questioned.

The Vatican is asked about the steps it has taken to prevent accused clergy from having access to children, about bishops who have failed to report allegations to the police, about what investigations the Church has run and what compensation or counselling [sic] the Church has offered victims, and about the safeguarding measures the Church has put in place to prevent future abuse.

The real story will be in Francis’ response. The UN has no real authority over Vatican sovereignty  – in fact, Vatican officials have been giving this committee the run-around for years. The only consequences for noncompliance are sanctions. For a nation-state eye-deep in wealth and with a constant income stream from faithful Catholics worldwide, I am sure the Curia could not care less.

    So Francis has three choices:

    1. Pony up the documents,
    2. Tell the committee to go pound sand, or
    3. Stall

Considering that the Vatican refuses to remove a bishop who pled guilty to child endangerment and that recent document dumps in LA and Milwaukee were embarrassing and exposed criminal activity, we can assume that Option 1 is off the table.

So Francis is left with Option 2 and Option 3. Will he rise to the occasion (in the tradition of his namesake)?

    We shall see …

  • New Showtime series addresses Catholic Clergy Abuse Crisis

I have not seen the series premiere yet, but Showtime is streaming the whole first episode of their new series RAY DONOVAN on YouTube.

According to the Facebook page: “Set in the sprawling mecca of the rich and famous, RAY DONOVAN does the dirty work for LA’s top power players. The one-hour drama series stars Liev Schreiber as the go-to guy who makes the problems of the city’s elite disappear”

Why do I care (besides the fact that I really need a new show to watch now that I have seen all of the episodes of Walking Dead and Downton Abbey)? Well, it’s personal. Last year, the show’s production supervisor reached out to me because one of the show’s stars hoped to talk to victims of priest sexual abuse. Actor Dash Mihok wanted to create an accurate representation of his character Bunchy Donovan, Ray’s brother, who is a victim of sexual abuse by a Catholic priest. Since I personally could not help (I’m not male and not a victim of a priest), I put them in contact with my good friend Ken (an actor, as well as a survivor), who helped him wrap his arms around a complex and difficult subject.

Kudos to actor Dash Mihok and the producers of RAY DONOVAN for being brave enough to talk to victims, instead of relying upon stereotypes. Hopefully, the portrayal of Bunchy is compassionate to victims and helps anyone suffering in shame and silence to come forward, get help and report crimes.

  • Honolulu Star Advertiser: Victims of church sexual abuse need criminal lawyers, not therapy

    From today’s Honolulu Star Advertiser:

Victims of church sexual abuse need criminal lawyers, not therapy

    By Marilyn Wong

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Hawaii, via a newspaper ad that ran Monday, is offering therapy treatment and reconciliation for the victims of sex abuse.

Directing victims to go to the diocese for help is like sending the sheep back to the wolves. The diocese had the chance years ago to help victims, but did not act because, at the time, the statute of limitations protected the church. Instead, people claiming abuse were vilified, accused of seeking money, and told that the limitations had expired on their cases. Now that the two-year window has been opened, the church is scurrying to connect with the victims.

The problem is that the diocese makes it seem like the abused have an illness in need of therapy when in actuality they are victims of a crime in need of justice. What these people really need is an attorney who will take their case to court and fight the good fight all the way to a conviction where the abusers will be listed as sex-offenders for life and prevented from ever being around children again. This is what the victims really want.

And they also want the hierarchy cleaned up of its cover-ups. Be it pedophilia (sexual attraction to pre-pubescent children) or efebophelia (sexual attraction to adolescents aged 13-19), the fact that priests and religious could get away with this for so many years, and that ordinary people would scramble to protect and hide or cover-up the facts so as not to bring “scandal” on the church is mind-boggling. In the end, not only do the victims suffer more, oftentimes for life, but the laity end up seeing their donations used to pay for the abuser’s crimes rather than used to do God’s work.

A word of caution about these so-called therapeutic services: One Oahu man who brought a priest up on charges of abuse (who later admitted guilt), was sent by the diocese to a Franciscan sister (who had a private practice) for therapy. She questioned his memory of the event. He turned around and sued for a monetary sum and won.

Do not be naive. In the 1960s, Pope Paul VI, coming out of a spiritual ecstasy while praying stated, “The smoke of Satan has entered the sanctuary.”

During the late 1980s and ’90s, John O’Connor, editor of Catholic Lay Press, and Patricia Morley, host of the radio program Concerned Catholics, tried to warn parents to watch out for their children, but they were vilified by laity and clergy alike, even excommunicated by the then-Bishop Joseph Ferrario of Honolulu. After two years, Rome finally reversed the excommunication, but no apology was ever offered from the diocese.

I would like to share Pope John Paul II’s words with the victims of abuse: “Be not afraid.”
