Think of it this way:

Mahony’s punishment is tantamount to Archbishop Gomez taking away Mahony’s key to the Executive Washroom. Now this “prince of the church” has to use the public restroom like the rest of us mere (moral and ethical) peasants.

But hopefully, the damage to Mahony’s credibility will be permanent. In fact, I think he would look quite dashing in jailhouse orange.

**Updated at 3:44 pm** Awesome blogger Rocco Palma posted the latest statement from the Archdiocese of Los Angeles:

Cardinal Mahony, as Archbishop Emeritus, and Bishop Curry, as Auxiliary Bishop, remain bishops in good standing in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, with full rights to celebrate the Holy Sacraments of the Church and to minister to the faithful without restriction.

So, in other words … nevermind. Mahony can get his key back and do whatever the hell he wants. Pah.

    Maybe the Vatican just heard about Gomez’s plans to oust Mahoney, and maybe “She” didn’t like it! After all, if Cardinal Law of Boston has been protected by the Vatican from prosecution for the last 10 years, how can “She” allow Roger Mahoney to be thrown to the wolves and possibly end up in prison with a Bubbahead as a room-mate! (Q mark broken)! Time will tell. Any bets that Gomez will be reprimanded by the Vatican for his knee-jerk reaction in outing Mahoney (Q mark)! Time will tell……. and “It ain’t over until it’s over!”

    Evidently Gomez forgot to read the fine print in the Canon Law manifesto. NOTHING can be given to or taken away from ANY prelate of the Church buy anyone other than the POPE. … Guess Gomez got around to reading the fine print.
